I’ve seen people saying progressives shouldn’t care about these rulings at all, or that LGBTQ people shouldn’t want the courts to rule in favor of same-sex marriage, because marriage is an inherently heterosexist and patriarchal institution. Like feminist Hulk, I understand those arguments. But I also understand wanting to marry the person you love, or just not wanting laws on the books that say you can’t ever marry the person you love. It is a complex issue, but as long as you don’t fall on the side of “we shouldn’t let the gays marry because THE CHILDREN and AMERICA and CHRISTIAN RIGHTS,” you’re cool with me and feminist Hulk.
Agree with all of the above. And, hey, maybe marriage will become less of a terrible patriarchal institution when everyone is allowed to do it. Maybe not, though.
maybe I’ll find some badass feminist quote to paint on a canvas for my wall when i’m painting my new shelves today. i like this one, but it’s kind of long:
“Some women choose to follow men, and some women choose to follow their dreams. If you’re wondering which way to go, remember that your career will never wake up and tell you that it doesn’t love you anymore.” - Lady Gaga
why do women think this quote is so awesome? talk about male entitlement. this is not a compliment, ladies. I am NOT “God’s gift to males.” as it turns out, I’m a person, not a thing! I don’t exist solely for the benefit of a man. and it belittles us by calling us “girls” too. the south is an awful place.
